Introducing our new Hospice Waikato Life Members

One of the highlights of Hospice Waikato’s recent Annual General meeting was the recognition of individuals whose outstanding service and commitment to Hospice Waikato spans many years and our Board Chair, Susan Hassall, was absolutely delighted to announce three new Life Members.  

The names will be familiar to many of you – Dr Peter Rothwell & Sir John and Glenice, Lady Gallagher.  

Dr Peter Rothwell

One of our first ever Life Members, Pippa Mahood, nominated Dr Peter Rothwell as a Life Member and when Pippa talks of Peter, it is with genuine respect and appreciation.  The two first met in 1976, when Peter joined Pippa’s late husband, Brian, as a colleague at Waikato Hospital.  Pippa describes Peter as one of those rare people who quietly but steadfastly help people and organisations that they believe are important to the fabric of a community.  And for more than 40 years, Dr Peter has done just that.  He has been a regular donor, reflecting not only his generosity, but a deep personal belief in the work we do.  Beyond the financial contributions, he has shown a genuine interest in our activities and initiatives, taking the time to understand our challenges and successes. His thoughtful insights and perspective have made him an invaluable sounding board for Pippa in the early days, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical advice whenever needed.

Sir John's legacy of philanthropy and community leadership spans decades. His commitment to the wellbeing of others is evident in his support for countless charitable initiatives, including his pivotal role in advancing the mission of Hospice Waikato. Alongside Glenice, he has championed compassionate care for those facing life-limiting illness, ensuring that dignity and comfort remain at the heart of our community’s response to end-of-life care.

Their generosity has not only provided vital financial support but has also inspired others to give and support. The Gallagher family’s involvement in events such as the Bucket List Banquet and their sponsorship of key Hospice initiatives has helped shape the organisation into what it is today.

Sir John and Lady Glenice embrace the values of service, empathy, and leadership. Their impact is part of the Hospice Waikato's story, and it is fitting that they be honoured with Life Membership— an acknowledgment of their profound and lasting influence.

Dr Peter, Sir John and Glenice embody the spirit of a Hospice Waikato Life Member and we are delighted to honor them with this Award.  Our sincere thanks for the meaningful difference they have made.
