Specialist Respite Care: Enriching Lives with Tailored Support
Rainbow Place offers nurse-led respite care, including overnight or day stays at our Cobham Drive location, as well as in-home or hospital-based respite. This service gives families valuable time to rest, knowing their child is receiving specialised, holistic care in a safe and supportive environment.
Care is focused on the total wellbeing of each child, including:
• Expert pain and symptom management, especially for children with complex and evolving needs
• Collaboration and care coordination with paediatricians, GPs, homecare nurses, hospital staff, and services including True Colours and the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT), to deliver seamless and continuous care
• A multi-sensory specialised accessible environment that encourages children to play, explore, socialise and engage in activities that celebrate their abilities and individuality
Recreation, Play, Development and Connection
At Rainbow Place, recreation and play are not just activities—they are essential pathways to connection, healing, and joy. Every child is encouraged to explore what makes them feel alive, supported, and seen. Whether through movement, music, creativity, or connection, the team centres each child's unique abilities and interests.
Child-Led Development and Play
At Rainbow Place, the focus is always on what children can do. Through individualised, child-led sessions, children are supported to:
• Make their own choices
• Express themselves creatively and emotionally
• Build confidence and self-worth
• Connect with others and grow at their own pace
The compassionate, skilled team is dedicated to fostering an atmosphere where children feel safe, valued, empowered and celebrated for who they are.
Therapeutic Use of Music
Music is woven into the rhythm of Rainbow Place. Beyond enjoyment, it plays a powerful therapeutic role by helping children:
• Express their emotions
• Manage pain and symptoms
• Support physiotherapy and breathing
Both traditional instruments and adaptive technology—including sensory and motion-based systems—are utilised to ensure accessibility for all abilities.
Vibroacoustic therapy, which uses sound vibrations to stimulate the body, further promotes relaxation, comfort, and wellbeing.
