General Practitioners

Many people wish to die at home surrounded by their friends and family. Our aim at Hospice Waikato is to work in partnership with our primary care colleagues to provide cohesive, coordinated care for patients and whānau.

While in the community, the patient’s General Practitioner (GP) will remain the lead clinician; support and advice is available from our specialist palliative care medical team, if required.

Our Community Nursing team can support GPs in assessing, communicating, and managing symptoms, to provide wrap around care for our patients who are at home.

If you would like to discuss a patient with a palliative care specialist, please phone 0800 Hospice and ask to speak to one of our medical team. After-hours advice is also available via Waikato Hospital switchboard.
