Advance Care Planning is about what matters to you, and what you would want if you were very unwell and couldn't speak for yourself.
Talking about the end of life isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most caring conversations you can have. Hospice Waikato’s “Starting the yarn is the hardest part” campaign encourages people to begin simple, honest kōrero about what matters most to them, now and into the future.
Advance Care Planning (ACP) is about thinking ahead and sharing your wishes for your care if you become unwell and can’t speak for yourself. It’s not about giving up hope, it’s about making sure your voice is heard, your values are respected, and your whānau aren’t left guessing.
These conversations don’t need to be formal or rushed. They can start over a cup of tea, in the car, or around the kitchen table. What’s important is starting, and knowing support is available.
Hospice Waikato walks alongside people and whānau across our region, supporting quality of life and dignity at the end of life. By starting the yarn early, you help ensure care reflects what matters most to you: today, tomorrow, and when it really counts.
We have included a link so you can access the national Advance Care Planning framework and we encourage you to take a few moments to take a look - https://www.myacp.org.nz/your-plan.

Advance Care Planning isn’t a one‑hour task, or even a one‑day conversation. It takes time to reflect, to talk things through, and to really consider what matters most to you — your values, your wishes, and the people important in your life.
That’s okay. This is not something to rush. Hospice Waikato can help you take those first steps.
Our Advance Care Planning introduction sessions provide a supportive, relaxed space to learn more and start thinking things through. Members of our team share their own experiences with Advance Care Planning, helping you explore what’s important to you and how to begin the conversation with those you care about.
