Rainbow Place is the children and young people’s service of Hospice Waikato – the only hospice in New Zealand that offers specialist child-focussed palliative care services supporting children/young people aged 0-18 years and their families, living with a life limiting/life threatening condition. Rainbow Place provides care through a team approach that includes specialist nursing care, counselling, social work, spiritual care and practical support for as long as the child/young person needs it. Care and support is also provided wherever it is needed, such as the family home, school, hospital and other community facilities. Rainbow Place staff are supported in their work by the large team of specialist palliative care staff at Hospice Waikato, including voluntary staff who enhance the service and facilities in a variety of ways.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistant to join our Rainbow Place and In-Patient Unit (IPU) teams on a casual, as required basis. There are three shift times, an AM shift (7am - 3.30pm), a PM shift (2.30pm - 11pm) and a night shift (10.30pm – 7.30am). We are seeking applicants to work with children and young people under our Rainbow Place service and/or with adults staying in our IPU. As a part of the IPU and Rainbow place team’s you will provide a high level of health care assistance under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Both adults and young people under our Rainbow Place service stay in our IPU for respite, symptom management or end of life care. When working with children the HCA cares for one child at a time. The children we support have a high level of complex health needs which require 24/7 one to one care. You will have the opportunity to work with amazing people and their family/whanau on their journeys. You will need to have lots of energy and compassion and most importantly be ready to have lots of fun!

To be the right fit for this role and our organisation you would bring:

Essential:
• Previous experience in a caring role
• Experience working with children and young people
• Comfortable working around grief and loss
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Emotional maturity and resilience

Desirable:
• NZQA Qualification in Rest Home Care / Community Support Services (or equivalent)
• Proven experience in paediatric palliative care
• Current First Aid Certificate
