End of Life Care

Waikato Hospice is actively involved in facilitating difficult conversations about loss and grief, death and dying and supporting other health professionals to facilitate these conversations.

Advanced Care Planning

Recognising Dying
• How to identify the usual symptoms of dying.

End of Life Communication
• The impact that communication has on patients and those caring for patients at the end of life.
• How we communicate and what can cause challenges as we communicate with people, families, whānau and other members of the team.

• Agitation/delirium/terminal restlessness
• Respiratory tract secretions
• Nausea and vomiting
• Breathlessness (dyspnoea).

Advanced Care Planning

Advance care planning is an important aspect of helping people to take control of their own health. It helps patients to clarify their thinking about what is important to them as they near the end of their life.

• What is an Advance Care Plan and Advance Directive?
• What is the Legal framework in the context of ACP and Advance Directives?
• How and when is an ACP used?
• As a health professional how do I structure and document an ACP conversation?

Applicants are expected to have completed the Level 1 on-line (4) modules prior to attending the workshop.
