WHAT IS HOSPICE WAIKATO?

Hospice Waikato provides a variety of specialised care services for people who are dying – supporting them, their families and carers through illness, death and bereavement. Hospice is a Charitable Trust founded in 1981 independent of any other organisation and administered by a Board of Trustees.  Hospice Waikato is financially supported through the generosity of individuals, community groups, businesses, trusts and foundations and the wider community.

 

 

WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR?

Our services are for people who have reached a palliative stage in their illness where the focus of treatment is on comfort and quality of life rather than cure and for the people who care for them. Hospice Waikato’s services are available to all people, regardless of their ethnicity, age, culture, gender or illness.

 

 

OUR SERVICES INCLUDE

·         Palliative Home Care Nursing

·         Access to in-patient beds for respite or end stage care

·         Collaborative Care in the wider Waikato, working in partnership with the District Nurses to maximize
   efficiency.

·         Palliative Care for children and their families

·         Pre and post-bereavement counseling for surviving family members

·         Emotional support throughout illness and death

·         Individual support or support groups for bereaved family/whanau members

·         Support groups for family/whanau

·         Family support Volunteers for companionship or family/whanau/carer relief. All receive ongoing 
  supervision at no charge.

·         Biography Volunteers to assist patients with life review, we have a joint agreement with Alzheimer’s 
  Waikato and train their Biographers. The Board of Alzheimer’s uses our facility for Board meetings, at

          no charge.

·         Equipment resources and library books for loan

·         Education for community groups and health professionals, both rurally and within the urban setting.

·         We teach carers who work in Rest Homes about palliative care for their patients and we assist

           Registered Staff to reach competency with syringe drivers. We also run study days for our

           volunteers.

·         Consultancy with other health professionals, many of whom meet at our facility.

·         We provide suitable meeting rooms for both the DHB and other health professionals.

·         Rainbow Place – our children and young peoples care facility

 

 

DO YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR HOSPICE CARE?

All Hospice Waikato services are provided at no charge to patients and their families / whanau.

 

 

 

HOW CAN THIS SERVICE BE ACCESSED?

Patients [or their family / whanau] can contact us direct, or ask their doctor, health professional or hospital ward to refer them to us.

 

 

 

RAINBOW PLACE

rainbowplacelogo_smlOur children and young people’s facility Rainbow Place provides a unique child-focused, family-centred service and was the first of its kind established in New Zealand. As with all Hospice Waikato models of care, services are provided to children, teenagers and their families/whanau at no charge. Rainbow Place supports families through serious illness and bereavement.
