Family Support

Caring for a loved one during this time can be very tiring. Hospice Waikato family support volunteers may be available in your area to visit and spend time with patients, giving cares valuable time out.

Who are Hospice Family Support Volunteers?
They are people who have volunteered their services to Hospice Waikato and have been carefully selected and trained by Hospice Waikato to work in this particular area of care.

What can you expect from a Family Support Volunteer?
A commitment to supporting the patient and their family/carers in whatever way is mutually seen as necessary and appropriate:
• As a companion
• A listening ear
• An advocate
• A practical support
• Relief for the caregiver, “time out”.

Family Supporters are not expected to carry out nursing care duties, administration of medication or housework – but certain aspects of these may be negotiated in individual situations.

How often does your Family Support Volunteer visit?
Times are agreed between the patient/family and the volunteer after the initial consultation with the Hospice nurse and/or the social worker.
